Maintaining a fifty-fifty relationship with your horse is extremely important. Whether you are on the ground or riding, you are in a mutual partnership with your horse. That is why you must understand that horses, like humans, have feelings and good and bad days.
There is always a reason or explanation for your horse's behaviour. Assume you bring him in, and he's a little off and not really listening to you. Have you considered the possibility that the herd was picking on him all night? Was it rainy, cold, or windy? You have to take in all of these factors because they have such a huge impact on your horse, just as they do on us.
Some days your horse can only contribute thirty per cent; therefore, you must fill in with seventy per cent. Sometimes it will be the other way around, or it will be fifty-fifty. Just remember, "They are your dance partner; you are not the dance teacher."
In conclusion, the more time you spend listening and talking to your horse, the better you two will get at communicating. Not to mention, your bond will grow as well. Just remember, every horse communicates in their own unique way.
